About Rocks

In The Beginning...

It all started in June of 2009 when a high school junior was looking for inspiration for his senior project. As an exuberant science enthusiast, Brock was enrolled in Advanced Placement science classes, but was disappointed that his high school had no Earth Science courses.

Low and behold, this led to the perfect project idea. As a future geology major and science teacher, Brock saw the perfect opportunity to encourage change, and excite fellow students, too. This is where rocks began – the quest to bring Geology to Heritage.

…there was a guy named Brock….

I am a leader. I am a learner. I am an educator. I am a scientist. I am part of an generation that is dependant upon the development and advancement of science and education.

I am especially excited about this project. As a science-focused student and a future teacher, I am thrilled to think that this project could forever change people’s perception of Earth Sciences. My hope is that a severe lack of education will be transformed into a competitive, educationally-intensive program.

This is only my first step in continuing to excite others about science and science education.

….and he’s still got lots of plans.

rocks is more than a senior project. The long-term goals of rocks will take several years, an extreme amount of effort, and multiple volunteers. rocks is more than just a graduation requirement, it is a passion.

In order to meet these long-term goals, as well as the senior project requirements, I’ve put some short-term goals into place. Within the next year, it is my goal to introduce a well-developed curriculum to Heritage High School and other high schools in the Evergreen School District that will be implemented in the 2010-2011 school year. It will also be necessary for me to excite students about Earth Sciences and encourage them to participate in the newly introduced course.

In the long term, the ultimate goal of rocks is to start a revolution. It is my hope that the excitement brought by Earth Sciences will spread to other districts in the Portland Metro Area and in the state of Washington. Through the acquisition of multiple volunteers, it is my goal that the revolution will eventually spread to multiple states and multiple districts.
